Orlando Pride forwards Alex Morgan and Marta were named to the FIFPRO Women’s World 11 on Sept. 23 in Milan.
More than 3,500 women’s footballers selected the team that featured one goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders and three forwards. The winners were judged on their play during the 2018-19 club season and this summer’s Women’s World Cup.
Marta appeared in her fifth Women’s World Cup this summer. She set the all-time record for goals scored in the Women’s World Cup in Brazil’s group stage victory over Italy. Her 17 World Cup goals are more than anyone in history — male or female.
The Women’s World 11 was introduced in 2015. Marta and Morgan have both appeared on the team three times.
Morgan scored six goals for the United States Women’s National Team to help the Americans win a second straight Women’s World Cup.
“It’s a huge honor to be selected as a part of the FIFA World11,” Morgan said in a statement released by U.S. Soccer. “This World Cup was the most competitive one yet. It was so entertaining for the fans and there were so many incredible players that are deserving of being on this list so to selected for this team alongside many of my teammates and these other fantastic players is a great way to end this historic year.”
Miami resident, and USWNT manager, Jill Ellis, was named The Best FIFA Women’s Coach for 2019. This was the second time Ellis earned the reward.
Morgan and Ellis were among the six Americans recognized in Milan. Defender Kelley O’Hara, midfielders Julie Ertz and Rose Lavelle and forward Megan Rapinoe were also named to the FIFPRO Women’s World 11. Rapinoe was also named The Best FIFA Women’s Player for 2019.
