St. Johns Country Day extended its state-best winning streak to 25 matches on Thursday night with a 2-1 win over reigning Class 7A state champion, St. Johns Bartram Trail.

The Spartans (4-0) entered the game having not conceded in any of its first three games. Meanwhile, Bartram Trail (1-1) entered the contest without three of its starters.

All the scoring was in the first 17 minutes.

St. Johns sophomore Lauryn Mateo scored in the first minute of the match. Bella Pontieri doubled the advantage in the 16th when she half-volleyed an opportunity over Bartram’s goalkeeper.

Less than a minute after Pontieri’s goal, Bartram Trail midfielder Malia Roberts headed home a corner kick to halve the Bears’ deficit.

St. Johns had opportunities to put the game away in the second half, but could not. The match ended with the fastest player on the pitch, Bartram Trail sophomore Olivia Bori, with the ball at her feet and no one between her and St. Johns freshman goalie Roxy Mathews.
