Undefeated Port Orange Spruce Creek leads the way

This isn’t the first time Port Orange Spruce Creek has taken flight with an unbeaten start to the season. The question for the Hawks is whether they can maintain those performances in February when matches matter the most.
Spruce Creek (11-0-1) is the No. 1 overall team in the state in the FHSAA boys soccer rankings that were released Tuesday afternoon. The Hawks won each of their first 12 matches in the 2020-21 season, only to get shocked by Lake Mary in the District 2-7A final and be upset by Jacksonville Mandarin in the first round of the FHSAA playoffs.
Trophies are not awarded for leading the statewide rankings. But, it is a good barometer for where teams stand at the halfway point of the season.
Down in the Bay Area, Tampa Prep appears primed to return to prominence.
The six-time FHSAA champion Terrapins have been good, but not elite in recent years. That tide appears to be shifting. Tampa Prep (8-0-1) thumped its local nemesis Clearwater Calvary Christian in its opener and beat perennial power Tampa Jesuit in November. The Terrapins beat reigning Class 3A state champion Tampa Catholic 6-0 on Dec. 18 in a statement of intent, then followed up with a 2-2 draw against Seminole Osceola in the second half a doubleheader.
