Tampa Jesuit retains top spot in Sunshine State
By Official Florida FC
Tampa Jesuit’s claim to statewide supremacy will be tested over the next two weeks.
The Tigers were the No. 1 team in the FHSAA boys soccer rankings that were released on Jan. 3. Jesuit kicked off the season with a 4-1 win over a traditionally strong New Port Richey Mitchell program on Tuesday night.
Jesuit is one of six programs that is unbeaten and untied. Viera (10-0-0), Valrico Bloomingdale (10-0-0), Miami Mourning (7-0-0), Winter Park (7-0-0) and Riviera Prep (5-0-0) are the others.
Bloomingdale and Jesuit will play on Thursday night in the Tampa Bay Invitational.
Another team competing in the Tampa Bay Invitational is Tampa Prep. Last year, Tampa Prep became the eighth team in state history to finish a boys soccer season unbeaten and untied when it won the Class 3A state championship last year with a 21-0-0 record. The Terrapins are 3-0-5 this season ahead of this weekend’s Tampa Bay Invitational.
Miami St. Brendan moved up to the No. 2 spot. The Sabres (7-0-1), the reigning Class 4A state champions, did not play over the holiday break.
Viera, the top-ranked public school in the state, will not leave Brevard County until the District 7-6A tournament later this month. The Hawks will play their first game in nearly three weeks on Friday night when they travel to Melbourne Holy Trinity (7-1). If they win that match, it may be smooth sailing to an undefeated regular season.
Elsewhere in the statewide top 10, Panama City Beach Arnold and Winter Park Trinity Prep both moved up two spots. Arnold (7-0-2) is No. 5 in the state, while Trinity Prep is No. 8.
Here is a look at the rest of the statewide top 10.
