The Flagler College women’s soccer team ended its belated regular season with an emphatic 7-0 win over Georgia Southwestern on Friday afternoon in Americus, Ga.
Friday’s win not only gave the Saints (7-0-1) the outright Peach Belt Conference regular season title for the second straight season, but marked the second straight campaign the St. Augustine-based school finished unbeaten. The Saints outscored conference opponents 27-1 this season.
Jess Leach opened the scoring in the fifth minute. Phoebe License scored her first goal of the season in the 18th minute. Moe Arlebo and Annie Habeeb both scored a brace. Sophomore midfielder Josefine Nilsen added three assists.
Flagler is ranked No. 4 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division II poll. The Saints were the only Florida-based Division II program to compete in the spring 2021 season. The Sunshine State Conference did not sponsor women’s soccer this spring and the University of West Florida elected to not participate in the 2021 spring season.
Friday’s win extends Flagler’s regular season unbeaten streak to 27 matches. Flagler finished 23-1-1 in the 2019 season before losing in the Division II national semifinals.
The Covid-19 pandemic cancelled the NCAA Division II Tournament this year. That means the Saints, at best, are two games away from an unbeaten season.
Flagler hosts UNC Pembroke (6-3-1) in a Peach Belt Conference semifinal on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Should Flagler win, it would host either No. 12 North Georgia (7-2) or No. 11 Columbus State (5-1-1) in the tournament final on Saturday, April 10.
