Ponte Vedra remained undefeated following a home win over one-loss Bolles on Jan. 12. The Sharks (9-0-2) are Northeast Florida’s last unbeaten boys soccer team. Daniel Villarreal’s program hasn’t gone this long into a season unbeaten since the Sharks finished 25-0-0 in 2016.

Ponte Vedra was ranked No. 20 in the statewide rankings that were released on Jan. 11. The Sharks would likely move up a few places based on the quality of the win over the No. 3 team in Class 3A.

Aaron Novak, Jonathan Luce and Dylan Ball scored for the Sharks. Bolles (8-2) cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 28th minute when Jack Leake headed home Sean Breuer’s corner kick.

The good-natured rivalry between the two Northeast Florida programs was apparent before Breuer whipped in his assist. A few Ponte Vedra players who were warming up near the touchline were joking with Breuer about where he would put his corner kick and dared him to put in a good service. When he did, he turned toward the playful hecklers and smiled.

Three minutes later Ball restored Ponte Vedra’s two-goal advantage.
