Orlando City’s quest for its first berth in the MLS Cup playoffs were dented following Saturday’s home draw with the New England Revolution.

The Lions (9-13-9, 36 points) trailed twice, but rallied for a 3-3 draw. The result meant New England (10-10-10, 40 points) held onto the seventh, and final, berth in MLS Eastern Conference for another week.

With three games remaining, Orlando City is currently 10th in the Eastern Conference. The Lions have three games to leapfrog the Chicago Fire (9-12-10, 37 points), Montreal Impact (11-16-4, 37 points) and the Revolution.

“Obviously incredibly proud of the second half performance,” Orlando City head coach James O’Connor told OrlandoCitySC.com after the match. “It was incredible when you look at the guts and you look at the quality, on another night we end up winning it. I think the second half after probably about 15 minutes when we went to 3-3, then the game really opens up and then they have a couple of chances, we have some chances. I think to be 3-1 down and then come back out second half and fight like that, the players deserve enormous credit.”

After Saturday’s draw, the Lions will likely need to win its remaining road games against Houston and Cincinnati, as well as its Decision Day contest against the Fire on Oct. 6, to qualify for the postseason.

Currently, Orlando City does not own any of the top three tiebreakers — wins, goal difference and goals scored — against the teams it is competing with for a playoff position.
